Streaming videos stutter at the most crucial moments; remote workers lose their connection during important conferences — a stable internet connection is more important than ever. The solution for reliable connectivity is fiber optic technology. The German federal government’s goal of achieving nationwide fiber-optic expansion by 2030 is currently at risk, as I already outlined in my previous article, “Nationwide Fiber-Optic Expansion by 2030: How This Vision Can Become Reality.” While the number of connected households is rising, the activation rate — meaning actual usage of the connections (Homes Activated) — lags significantly behind: According to a recent study by EY conducted in collaboration with Deutsche Telekom, only 28 percent of households with access to fiber-optic internet are actively using their connection.
At the same time, many users remain satisfied with the data transfer speeds of their current DSL or copper connections. Yet this comfort is deceptive: Germany’s data demand doubles every three years! It’s already evident that copper cables and other older technologies will not be able to keep up with this growth over the long term. This trend makes the switch to fiber optics inevitable. The technology brings numerous advantages that make it the superior alternative:
With a fiber-optic connection, users surf at impressive speeds of up to one gigabit per second (Gbit/s). This means data flows with virtually no delay, videos load in an instant, and even large files are downloaded in no time. Buffering is finally a thing of the past with fiber optics.
To illustrate its performance: Fiber optics can transmit ten times more data than a conventional VDSL line with 100 Mbit/s. This difference isn’t just visible in numbers — it’s clearly felt in everyday use. At peak time, 8:15 PM, some residents in the same apartment building are streaming live TV, while others are watching a movie, browsing online, downloading large files, or joining video calls. With a conventional connection, this could quickly lead to bottlenecks. But with fibre optics, the connection stays fast and stable—no matter how many devices are in use at once.
