What the AI Act Requires from Hospital Executives

Starting August 2027, the EU AI Act’s high-risk requirements will apply to medical AI systems. While the MDR governs product safety, the AI Act adds a distinct layer: AI-specific risk management, strict requirements for training-data quality, technical documentation exceeding MDR standards, and mandatory systems for human oversight.

For hospital executives, this translates concretely: Every AI system used in diagnostics or treatment planning must be embedded within a formal governance framework. That includes selection (Which AI – and on what evidence base?), integration (How is it embedded into clinical workflows?), monitoring (Who oversees its real-world performance?), and fallback (What happens if the system fails?).

1. Who decides on deployment – and who oversees it? AI diagnostics requires a clearly designated C-level owner – not just the CIO or the Medical Director alone, but a board member who grasps both clinical and regulatory dimensions.
